Sad.

Despairing. I have trouble breathing when I think about it. And I could never have predicted this, but *wow*, a baby is an unpredictable thing on so many levels. I return to work on August 1 and I am heart broken. I know mamas and papas do this all over the place all the time, but I can't imagine how. My love affair with this baby cannot be matchless - parents everywhere know its depths. I can't imagine how after spending every moment with this little girl, I will suddenly disappear for hours and hours a day. I even feel like I will somehow lose my baby in doing this - my wild thoughts go so far. I just keeping asking myself questions: will Colette have a strong enough bond with her parents to form secure attachments, to be confident, caring, empathetic - the whole human she deserves to be? On some level it is ridiculous. Of course a baby can grow and become self-realized with parents who work full time. We have found a very caring, kind and tender nanny. I wrote her a long testimonial of my love for Colette and how, to me, loving this little baby is much more important than any other aspect of her job. And still, on some visceral and non cognitive level, this - leaving - remains the hardest thing I have ever done.

You're definitely not alone. My mother worked full time (no choice, alas) while her babies were little and she mourned the loss for years :( I just couldn't do it so stayed home with my babies, but I was lucky enough to have the choice... we just learned to budget and do without the non-necessitites for a while. Good luck to you Emilie... it's not an easy thing by any stretch of the imagination. x

Beautifully written Emilie. It will be tough but baby Colette will always know you love her I am sure...she is a special little girl with a special mommy.

I cried the whole way to work and back the first day. I only got three weeks with my first!

It is very, very hard; but I had to do it because Jim was in school.

They survive, and so do you; but you always wonder.

I was grateful not to have to do it anymore once Jim finished his Ph.D.

How poignant. I will wish you strength as you work through this transition. I came across this NYT article and thought of you: http://parenting.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/06/22/what-the-most-successful-parents-do-before-breakfast/?src=recg

She will be safe and secure in your beautiful home in good hands. And I do think this year she will be napping for a good chunk of the day. Plus, in a way she will have an advantage. You will cherish the time you do have with her. Not every mom understands how precious that time is. Love you Emilie. You can do this. You can do anything.

Emilie, my heart breaks for you, truly. I haven't even met your little one yet, but I feel so much love for you both, and I wish you the best. I can't offer much by way of advice, but I applaud you for your photography. Having a vast album of baby pictures to pore over as the months and years go by helps to savor each stage, which passes quickly whether you are at home or not.

I feel your pain Emilie. I can't imagine.

I'm sure baby Colette will get great care and plenty of love while you're away. The nanny won't be able to help but fall in love with her.

Best wishes as you go forward. I'll be thinking of you.

You're a wonderful mamma!

I can understand where you're coming from. The twins are just a little older than Colette, and it would be tough to be away from them. Seeing it from another angle, though, I watched a little girl for about a year while her mom worked full time. We all fell in love with her, and she had a fun time with us. Colette will do great with the nanny and then be thrilled to see you when you walk through the door.
